A Grand Opening of the First Restaurant in Syria that is Served by Hosts with Down Syndrome

Syria: Recently, a grand opening for first restaurant and café which served by hosts with Down syndrome in Damascus, Syria

“Societe restaurant and cafe” has been opened in Tishreen Park in the heart of Damascus. More than twenty youth boys and girls with Down syndrome are working permanently now in Societe restaurant, the first restaurant in Syria which served by people with disability.

Ragab K., the head of a Board of Directors of Roots Association, who supervises the restaurant, indicated that the youth are working under the supervision of Roots association’s volunteers. In addition, the association will train number of people who willing to work, whether they have Down syndrome or any other disability, in order to facilitate their entry into the market. She also pointed out that this project helps them to integrate into society, break down the stereotype of people with disabilities, and introduce their skills and secures them a stable income. Furthermore, this project provided job opportunities for ten young professionals in the field of tourism and hospitality.

While the opening of the restaurant, Minister of Education Dr. Tabbaa D. said this project is a unique idea that shows the capabilities of these young people to work like others, and it is important to encourage the restaurant guests and the community to achieve actual integration into society.

It is noteworthy that the county provided a place in Tishreen Park to be a place to implement this project and invited the park’s visitors to support Societe Restaurant.

The youth with Down syndrome expressed their happiness to work and serve restaurant’s guests with love and fulfill their requests as they trained. The parents also shared their happiness of realizing their dream. Huda pointed out that getting a job was her son’s hope that came true. Also, Maryam said that her daughter became more interactive with others after training and her entry into the market would change her life for the better.

The restaurant chef who supervises them in the department of preparing drinks and juices, explained that in addition to getting a job opportunity with them, he interacted with the project because it is a qualitative idea that supports these people who all they have is love and we must stand with them and encourage them.
