DENMARK: In support of ‘International Day of Persons with Disabilities’ (IDPD), on Monday, December 3, 2018, Siteimprove, a global Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company empowering digital teams to create inclusive websites, will break its own website. In effect, Siteimprove will disable style sheets, images, and JavaScript across its homepages to show visitors how a person using a screen reader ‘sees’ a site.

A screen reader is a form of assistive technology that through software applications conveys what is on a screen. The software application renders the page content via non-visual means, such as text-to-speech, sound icons, or Braille devices.

Siteimprove is proud to lead the charge in web accessibility and believes accessing the internet, regardless of hardware, location, age, language, or ability, is a fundamental right. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) over a billion people, about 15% of the world’s population, have some form of disability.

The decision to effectively strip the company’s websites of its design was an easy decision for Morten Ebbesen, Siteimprove’s CEO. “Actions speak louder than words, which is why I fully support the idea to use our biggest business component – our website – to demonstrate the importance of accessibility elements such as alt texts for images,” said Ebbesen. “We employ a number of people who use screen-readers to navigate the web and we want to open the eyes of others to their experiences.”
