The African Union (AU) Assembly of African Union Heads of States and Governments adopted the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Africa in January 2018. The intent of the Protocol is to lay out the rights of persons with disabilities in a continental context, drawing directly from the CRPD while also addressing additional issues specific to Africa. This side-event will elaborate how African organizations of persons with disabilities (DPOs) have participated in the drafting of this important Protocol, providing a stronger basis for their advocacy towards disability-inclusive development on the continent, in alignment with the CRPD and the 2030 Agenda.
