Building Awarded Second Place in the Saudi Award of Excellence in Services for Person’s with Disabilities (PWD)

KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA: Under the supervision and guidance of AlModon Urban Consultancy on Universal Design & Accessibility and architect Mr. Mukhtar Alshibani, past-president of the Global Alliance for Accessible Technologies and Environments (GAATES); Ms. Fatin Al Yafi, GAATES Country Rep for the KSA and the team at the Fatin Al Yafi Consulting office in Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have recently completed an audit assessment for the General Administration of Passports Department building, located in Medina in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
After thorough analysis to identify the gaps, a complete assessment was presented that recommended application of the Universal Accessibility guidelines, including specific proposals to re- engineer the building to facilitate changes. The implementation of this plan and reconstruction work has resulted in a building that can accommodate everyone with various ranges of physical and mental abilities.
The study focused on the following 5 sections:
- The security house entrance
- The male client Service Centre
- The female client Service Centre
- The main building entrance
- The Mosque

The team’s accomplishments were further recognized when the building was awarded second place in the Saudi Award of Excellence in Services for Person’s with Disabilities (PWD).
