Delhi University distributed smartphones and electronic stick to 180 students with vision disabilities on Tuesday. The distribution was conducted after shortlisting the students registered in the Equal Opportunity Cell of the varsity which organised an assistive device distribution function under the Assistance to Disabled Person for Purchase/Fitting of Aids/ Appliances scheme in collaboration with the National Institute of the Visually Impaired and the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India for students with vision disabilities and other disabilities.
Forms were filled by the students from all over the University. The criterion behind the selection of students is that whoever had received any similar equipment in past were not chosen in this turn. However, there are many students who have not received any such equipments in past and were not selected this time as well, for such students another list will come out soon, said Deepak Rawat, the attendant at the EOC.
The phone has got special software that will help the operator in reading books (talking books), news, shopping, transportation and even using social media. Automatic assistance system was also introduced to the audience which will give navigation assistance.
