Asia-Pacific, August 29 2016
The Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons is hopeful that the new Disability Bill 2016 will be enacted as law next month.
FNCDP’s Executive Director – Sitiveni Yanuyanutawa says the bill has already been presented in parliament. Yanuyanutawa says the bill captures a number of features of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
It will also provide persons with disabilities, both within and outside the home, the right to protection from all forms of exploitation, violence and abuse including gender based violence.
Yanuyanutawa says the Disability Bill will be a first for Fiji.
