GAATES Side Event – COSP6

With great interest from participants and receiving offers to coordinate work with other international organizations, the Global Alliance on Accessible Technology and Environments held a successful Side Event on Thursday, July 18 at the United Nations 6th Conference of States Parties on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, at the the UN Headquarters in NYC, NC.
The side event was graciously chaired by Shuaib Chalklen, Special Rapporteur on Disability of the UN Commission for Social Development. The session included More than 30 participants from other leading international organizations and NGO’s, including; the World Blind Union, Red Latinoamericana de Organizaciones No Gubernamentales de Personas con Discapacidad y sus Familias (RIADIS), Disabled Peoples International (DPI) and G3ict, among others. GAATES was congratulated for its vision and strategies for incorporating an accessibility and Universal Design approach in the Post-2015 development agenda.
News and information regarding GAATES’ expanding network of country representatives and board members from all regions of the world was very well received.
In closing, the session touched on major challenges and issues to be addressed in the near future, including raising awareness about Universal Design as part of the disability and development agenda, training and global capacity building of persons with disabilities, and forging collaborative efforts between organizations and institutions.
