Chinese with hearing disabilities to receive legal advice by SMS
Asia-Pacific, March 5 2013
The Beijing Legal Assistance Center and Beijing Disable People’s Federation have signed an agreement to provide free legal consulting through short message service for people with hearing disabilities. It is the first of its kind in China.
According to the agreement, 36 law firms on the 12348-hotline will provide free telephone and online legal consulting services for people with disabilities.
Meanwhile, the Beijing Legal Assistance Center and Beijing Disable Persons’ Federation will issue 50,000 love cards to people with hearing disabilities in Beijing. The card carries the phone numbers of five volunteer law firms. They can send out a text message should they find themselves in legal trouble.
For those who are eligible for legal aid and those not eligible but in great need of legal help, the Beijing Legal Assistance Center and Beijing Disable Persons’ Federation will share information such as a database on people with disabilities to make sure that people with disabilities can obtain legal help in a timely manner.
